As summer began to settle over the city, the Beijing City International School (BCIS) community gathered to celebrate a milestone filled with hope, gratitude, and new beginnings. Faculty, families, alumni, and distinguished guests came together to honor the Class of 2026 and celebrate the start of the graduates’ next chapter.

The ceremony opened with a powerful performance by the BCIS Staff Drum Ensemble. Since its introduction in 2020, this tradition has become one of the most distinctive and cherished elements of BCIS graduation ceremonies.

Five years ago, a group of Secondary School teachers came together to form the ensemble, creating a unique way to celebrate graduating students, a tradition that continues to this day. With each passing year, faculty members take up the drumsticks and carry forward their commitment to supporting and guiding students, passing their encouragement, hopes, and aspirations from one graduating class to the next.

Accompanied by the uplifting beats, graduates, donning caps and gowns, entered the ceremony alongside their teachers. Their confident steps reflected years of dedication, perseverance, and achievement, while also symbolizing the shared journey of growth between students and educators. For the Class of 2026, this moment marked both a meaningful farewell and the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

More than a celebration, this graduation ceremony was a tribute to growth, belonging, and legacy.

In his opening remarks, BCIS Head of School Tom Egerton reaffirmed the school’s mission: to challenge and empower students to be compassionate and inspired people, who act for the good of all and for the sustainable development of the world.

He noted that the Class of 2026 embodies this mission in meaningful ways. Whether through academic pursuits, service initiatives, or personal development, graduates have demonstrated empathy, creativity, and courage—qualities that reflect the true purpose of education.

Representing the graduating class, George Gao and Flora Chen reflected on their shared journey through the lens of an object familiar to every BCIS student: the student ID card.

They explained that this small card represents far more than daily campus life. It symbolizes the deep sense of friendship, belonging, and community that defines the BCIS experience. It is through these relationships—built on trust, support, and shared experiences—that students have faced challenges together, celebrated successes, and created memories that make their high school years truly unforgettable.

While no one outside BCIS will understand the meaning of these cards, the lessons and memories behind them will stay with us like an invisible card we’ll carry wherever we go.

This powerful sense of belonging and connection, nurtured within the BCIS community, emerged as one of the most meaningful themes of the entire graduation ceremony.

Introduced by graduating students Daisy Li and Jerry Li, teacher speaker representative Mr. Eric Selley took the stage to address the Class of 2026.

As an influential mentor who has accompanied many graduates throughout their BCIS journey, Eric is known not only for his engaging classroom presence and distinctive teaching style, but also for encouraging students to think independently and persevere through challenges.

In his remarks, Eric reflected on the memorable experiences shared by the Class of 2026 and drew upon his own journey of moving to China to begin his career in education. He encouraged graduates to embrace uncertainty with confidence and courage.

Mr. Selley affirmed that life is not a script that has already been written, it is a journey of exploration filled with endless possibilities.

On behalf of the staff, Eric offered his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the graduating class, encouraging them to remain curious, kind, and courageous as they embark on the next stage of their lives.

Following Mr. Selley’s address, Grade 12 valedictorian George Gao delivered his commencement speech.

Recognized for his academic excellence, leadership, and meaningful contributions to the BCIS community, George chose not to share a conventional formula for success. Instead, he turned his attention to a more profound question: What is the true purpose of education?

Reflecting on the educational journey from elementary school through high school, George observed that while many people spend years striving toward the next milestone, few take the time to ask why they are learning in the first place.

In a rapidly changing world, he argued, education should not be viewed solely as preparation for a career or the pursuit of credentials. Rather, its deeper purpose is to expand our understanding of the world and help us discover greater meaning in life.

From a teacher’s words of encouragement to a graduate’s thoughtful reflections, the conversation about growth, exploration, and the meaning of education continued to unfold throughout the ceremony.

The focus then turned to two BCIS alumni from different graduating classes who returned to campus to share their experiences and offer their congratulations. Their presence highlighted another powerful theme of the day: the enduring legacy of the BCIS community.

Frank Zhao, a member of the Class of 2018, entrepreneur in the field of artificial intelligence, and one of the founders of the Avenir Business Competition, reflected on his journey from student to entrepreneur and shared his perspective on navigating uncertainty.

He noted that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing are transforming the world at an unprecedented pace. Yet the qualities that enable individuals to thrive amid change are not specific pieces of knowledge or technical skills, but rather the courage, perseverance, and resilience cultivated during their time at BCIS.

Frank recalled organizing the Avenir Business Competition, leading BCIS Editorial, and helping establish student-led clubs during his years at school. Seeing these initiatives continue to thrive in the hands of successive generations of students has reinforced his belief that the most valuable gift BCIS provides is not certainty, but the ability to create possibilities in the face of uncertainty.

Following Frank’s remarks, Yuanna Yao, a member of the Class of 2016 and now a BCIS High School Mathematics Teacher, addressed the audience from the unique perspective of both alumna and educator. From student to graduate and now teacher, her connection with BCIS has continued to evolve over the years.

Yuanna reflected on the profound impact the BCIS community has had on her own development and shared what it has meant to support the Class of 2026 throughout their four-year high school journey.

As a teacher, she has witnessed students grow through their involvement in academics, the arts, athletics, and community service. She has also seen them demonstrate responsibility and leadership through teamwork, perseverance, and compassion for others.

She encouraged graduates to pursue excellence while remaining authentic and caring, striving to become individuals who build meaningful connections with others and create a positive impact on the world around them.

Secondary School Principal Natalie Harvey then delivered her graduation address.

In her remarks, she reflected on the journey of the Class of 2026—from their first days on campus, marked by uncertainty and discovery, to the point where they found a sense of belonging, built lasting friendships, and developed into confident individuals. The maturity, compassion, inclusiveness, and collaborative spirit demonstrated by the graduates have helped shape the unique and welcoming BCIS community. In turn, they have become an indispensable part of that community.

“You will always be part of this community, and there will always be a place for you here.”

The ceremony then moved into one of its most symbolic and meaningful traditions—the Torch Passing Succession Ceremony.

Graduate representatives Shidong and Florencia began by expressing their gratitude to their families, teachers, and fellow students. They reflected on the idea that growth is never an individual journey alone; it is made possible by the support of family, educators, friends, and the broader BCIS community. These meaningful connections have helped shape who they are today and have supported them through every challenge and milestone along the way.

They then formally passed the ceremonial torch to members of the Class of 2027. More than a graduation tradition, the torch represents the values, spirit, and sense of responsibility that generations of BCIS students have shared and upheld. As the next graduating class accepted the torch, they also embraced the trust and responsibility it symbolizes, carrying the community’s legacy forward and continuing to write their own stories of growth and achievement.

As graduation caps were thrown high into the air, the Class of 2026 officially brought one chapter of their lives to a close and began another, filled with new opportunities and possibilities.

In this year’s university admissions cycle, graduates collectively received more than 210 university offers and nearly USD 4 million in scholarships. Their offers came from institutions across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong SAR, Australia, France, India, and other countries and regions, spanning more than 20 academic disciplines and including leading research universities, liberal arts colleges, and art and design schools.

More than 50% of graduates received offers from Top 30 U.S. universities, while over 88% gained admission to Top 50 U.S. institutions. Beyond the United States, more than 90% secured offers from Top 100 global universities, including the UK’s G5 universities, Canada’s top three universities, and Hong Kong’s top three universities. Students also earned recognition from some of the world’s most prestigious liberal arts colleges and art and design institutions.

For BCIS, however, university admissions have never been the ultimate destination of education. Beyond acceptance letters and rankings, what matters most are the character, capabilities, and values students develop throughout their journey. These qualities will accompany them into the future, empowering them to continue learning, exploring, and creating in an ever-changing world.

With the conclusion of the graduation ceremony, the Class of 2026 officially joined the global BCIS alumni network. Since welcoming its first graduating class in 2009, BCIS has cultivated a community of more than 600 alumni who now live and work across six continents and more than 30 countries and regions. They continue to make meaningful contributions in higher education, scientific research, business, the arts, entrepreneurship, and social impact.

As one graduate speaker shared during the ceremony:

Though we can strive along our separate paths, we will share the same wind across a thousand miles.

For BCIS alumni, the future may lead in different directions and toward different aspirations. Yet the friendships, courage, and sense of belonging they discovered at BCIS will continue to transcend time and distance, keeping them connected wherever life takes them. And it is this enduring connection that will inspire them to keep exploring, growing, and creating as they make their mark on the wider world.
