Second Semester Grade 10 Transition: Challenges and Adaptation

Looking back on my three years of high school, the most memorable turning point was my resolute switch to the international curriculum in the second semester of Grade 10. Before that, I had been accustomed to a traditional model: fixed classes, uniform lessons, and a predetermined pace. The international school’s flexible scheduling, all-English environment, and self-directed learning atmosphere were an entirely new and challenging experience. In the beginning, the unfamiliarity was overwhelming. Without a fixed class group, I had to move between classrooms for each subject, and all communication, presentations, and classwork were in English. The different rhythm left me feeling lost and unsettled.

Fortunately, years of earlier preparation gave me a solid base. My father had always placed great emphasis on developing my English proficiency—not through exam-focused drilling, but by cultivating my sense of the language and reading skills. As early as primary school, I began reading full-length English novels. Through daily immersive reading, I gradually acquired natural expressions, built a strong linguistic foundation, and developed the habit of thinking in English. This long-term accumulation meant that I did not fall behind in the all-English international classroom. I was able to handle English course materials, oral defences, and academic writing with relative ease. Through class interactions, group discussions, and academic presentations, I gradually shed my initial awkwardness, gained confidence, and adapted to the new system.

About IB: A Firm Choice

The IB programme fundamentally transformed my learning approach and mindset in ways that traditional education had never done. Instead of passively receiving knowledge, I learned to explore independently, think critically, and develop holistic competencies. Class was no longer a one-way lecture; digital devices became essential tools for research, data analysis, and online collaboration. At first, I also struggled with distractions—the vast online world was full of temptations. But over time, the programme taught me self-discipline and precise time management. I stopped relying on external supervision and learned to plan my daily and weekly schedules according to course priorities and deadlines, balancing study and relaxation. I finally broke free from passive learning habits and developed efficient, self-directed study routines.

Among all the gains, the most precious was the growth of my academic research skills. The IB curriculum places strong emphasis on academic writing and inquiry—from selecting a topic and conducting a literature review, to structuring arguments and revising drafts. Through repeated paper writing, I mastered research methods and became skilled at using digital tools to search efficiently through large volumes of literature. More importantly, I learned to filter, evaluate, and synthesise information—extracting core arguments and useful evidence to support my own work. This capacity for independent inquiry, deep thinking, and academic rigour goes far beyond exam-oriented learning; it is a core competence for university studies and lifelong learning.

University Planning: Why HKU?

My college planning journey was also marked by confusion, struggle, and a shift in mindset. Initially, my mother had always hoped I would apply to Hong Kong universities, but I was resistant and full of self-doubt. I had long heard that Hong Kong universities were highly competitive, with a fast pace and immense pressure. My deep-seated lack of confidence made me feel I could not handle such an environment; I was afraid of falling behind or failing to fit in. For a long time, I strongly resisted the idea of applying to Hong Kong.

What truly changed my mind was a trip to Hong Kong in the summer of 2025. That visit shattered my stereotypes and gave me a genuine appreciation of the city’s warmth and vision. One detail that touched me most was the escalator etiquette: everyone stands on the right, leaving the left side clear for others to pass. Such small gestures reveal a shared respect for rules, consideration for others, and a commitment to public order. At the same time, Hong Kong’s international atmosphere, diverse and inclusive culture, world-class educational resources, and vibrant energy deeply impressed me and showed me its immense potential and charm.

That summer trip not only eased my fears and anxiety, but also reshaped my approach to university applications. Back at school, I threw myself into the intense preparation and academic work of Grade 12. Countless days and nights were spent on practice questions, essays, and research projects. The heavy course load and complex academic tasks did not defeat me; instead, they pushed me to keep breaking my own limits and to build resilience. I gradually shed my former insecurity and timidity. With each challenge overcome, I accumulated strength and confidence. I became convinced that, after the IB programme and three years of growth, I already had the ability and mindset to thrive in the demanding academic environment of Hong Kong universities.

So I set Hong Kong universities as my core goal and gave it my all. All the persistence and hard work finally bore fruit: after months of preparation and waiting, I received the offer from The University of Hong Kong, marking a fulfilling end to my high school journey.

Looking back on this winding journey of growth, I realise that my greatest gain was never just an offer letter. True growth is about breaking biases, embracing the unknown, building confidence through accumulated experience, and reshaping oneself through challenges. The foundations laid in the past carried me forward; the perseverance I developed through hard times transformed me. In the future, I will carry the discipline, critical thinking, and courage I gained in high school to Hong Kong—a diverse and fertile place—where I will continue to deepen my studies, explore the unknown, and become a better version of myself.
