Review of speech content
Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Kevin Qian, and I'm the Chinese principal of Harrow Shenzhen. It's my great honor to be here to talk about some of Harrow Shenzhen's exploration in nurturing innovative talents by leveraging our tradition and innovation.
To be perfectly honest, because Harrow Shenzhen opened just 1 year ago, still a toddler compared to other more mature international schools, I'm truly humbled to be invited and couldn't say I'm here to share but I'm definitely here to learn and compare notes with all my fellow educators and school leaders. In Chinese, I'm here to Pao Zhuan Yin Yu and Jian Xian Si Qi. A little test for our conference interpreter.
So my speech today is divided into two parts: First, Who we are, including Harrow Shenzhen's school profile, Harrow School's tradition and excellent academic achievements; Second, what we are doing in terms of tapping into Harrow's tradition and cultivating innovation among our students.
To begin with, who we are. Located in Qianhai, Harrow Shenzhen consists of two schools, an existing K-12 international school providing UK national curriculum with a strong Chinese Program; and a K-12 bilingual private school with an A-level program which is in the process of founding. If you look at the history of Harrow, for 450 years, Harrow has been synonymous with educational excellence. And for over 20 years, Harrow Schools have been delivering educational excellence for life and leadership across Asia via establishing 9 schools in China, HK, and Thailand. Harrow Shenzhen enjoys strong collegial bonds with the Harrow network of schools in Asia and to the founding school in the UK. There are opportunities for staff and students to participate in activities and share expertise across the group – enriching the experience for our community.
I'm proud to say, academic excellence is expected and achieved in a Harrow School. Last year alone our students across the Harrow International Schools achieved outstanding results in international examinations – over 50% higher than UK schools at Grade 10 (IGCSE) and over 30% higher than UK schools at A-level. Outstanding examination results plus many other accomplishments and qualities students developed through a Harrow education lead to impressive university entrance achievements. Harrow students routinely gain acceptance to top higher education institutions across the globe – most notably in the UK and the US. Although Harrow Shenzhen has not yet produced our first cohort of graduates, we firmly believe we will be achieving equally if not more successful college destinations in due course. Why are we so confident? It is exactly because of the tradition that Harrow Shenzhen is building on and the innovation we are building up.
So, please allow me to share what we are doing with regards to innovation, which is the second part of my speech.
No. 1 Leveraging Tradition for Innovation
Harrow wouldn't be able to stay ahead of providing excellent education for over four centuries without its strong adherence to its rich heritage and a pursuit of innovation. The four Harrow Core Values, namely, Courage, Honor, Humility and Fellowship, developed through almost 450 years of educational excellence, guide and challenge all our students to develop themselves as whole and complete human beings, both in the classroom and through the many extra-curricular activities. Courage, Honor, Humility and Fellowship are the cornerstones that mark every Harrow student – from London to Shenzhen!
From these 4 values, we have derived six leadership attributes for our older students and what we called iRules for our young students. The six attributes are "contributing positively to the community" (iCare), "applying knowledge with compassion" (iCare Global), "solving problems collaboratively" (iTeam up), "Solving problems creatively" (iCreate), "making just and responsible choices”(iRespect), "Facing challenges with determination" (iGo for it). These attributes and irules are some of the core skills we want to foster in our students which also match with the 21st century learner skills and profile. Day in and day out, we impart these qualities patiently, set high expectation for students and assess their growth against these standards. Take "Solving problems creatively" or "iCreate" for example, it is to encourage students to use knowledge and imagination to find a solution when facing challenges, laying a solid foundation for students to innovate. Suffice it to say, Harrow's four values, six attributes and iRules can serve as a compass, guiding students in exploring innovation and searching for the way forward.
No. 2 Innovation within the Class
In our school, we provide a broad, balanced and knowledge rich program of study. In addition to the main subjects like Chinese, English, Math, Science, we do enhance in students the use of technology and devices via two major courses-digital literacy course like coding and STEM course like Design Art and Technology. When delivering these courses, Harrow Shenzhen also embraces modern innovative pedagogies by combining subject specialist teaching and the co-teaching model to maximize the personalized support students can obtain and strengthen efficacy in learning and teaching.
We maintain fairly innovative learning environment as well in that we use flexible learning spaces and encourage group work and independent work online and offline. As you can see, some of these practices are in sharp contrast to the traditional Chinese teaching and learning style like test-oriented teaching, and teacher-centered approach.
No. 3 Innovation via Partnership
A school alone couldn't provide every fantastic opportunity that suits every student's needs. That's why since Day 1 we decided to utilize the external resources unapologetically by collaborating with partners in our local community in Shenzhen, a city hailed as China's Silicon Valley where innovation is its DNA.
Harrow Group is working with computer scientists and engineers from Tencent, a Shenzhen-based tech giant famous for Wechat, to transform our campus so that staff and students could be equipped with the most advanced tools to conduct teaching and learning; it also frees up teachers from some mundane and tedious work that could easily be taken care of by AI technology, like registration in the morning. As a result, our great educational team could spend the majority of their time at school with kids to facilitate their learning.
Second, the Harrow Guest Speaker Program. Since a major part of a Chinese Principal's job is Home-school communication, I have been privileged to meet many of our parents who are high-caliber tech talents and entrepreneurs in the high-tech industry. Enlisting their help, I initiated this program to invite parent volunteers and their friends as guest speakers to share their professions, careers, and life experiences to our students.
It is a truly exceptional opportunity for our students to get out of their textbooks and academic routines sometimes so they can refresh themselves and explore their new interest or talent. We also have close ties with One Foundation to allow kids to get involved in pondering and potentially solving environmental and sustainable development issues inflicting upon parts of China and world.
By the same token, Harrow Shenzhen has initiated Innovation Week working with innovative programs provided by DJI, a leading tech company that also pays special attention to cultivating young engineers and computer scientists. Not only is Harrow Shenzhen furnishing a whole week of innovation activities but we are also providing a standing course in drones designing and programming in our 100+ Leadership and Service Activities.
There is nothing more fulfilling than to see the smiles and excitement on children’s faces, right?
I'm cognizant that what we are doing is neither unprecedented nor revolutionary, so to speak, but it's combing the best of east and west and certainly the right and better thing to do. And as Elon Musk once said and I quote: Innovation "is not some mysterious thing," "It's basically being just an absolute perfectionist about the product or service that you make." It also doesn't need to be some big breakthrough, he added. "Just make your product better. This is the thing that really matters." As an educator, I truly believe a Harrow education via combining the rich tradition and strong innovation, is the right product for our students and I'm proud to say that what Harrow Group and Harrow Shenzhen are striving for is constantly perfecting our product to achieve our vision of education excellence for life and leadership.
Thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy yourselves today.
