Report Highlights

This report contains three chapters: the importance of sport development, research on sports characteristics, and prospects of physical education in the future.

The report takes Chinese international high schools as the research target, based on the research of 26 international schools with great sports characteristics, analyzes the current situation of sports education in Chinese international schools and outlooks the development direction of sports education. This report aims to share the experiences of schools with sports characteristics and promote the upgrading of physical education in Chinese international schools in order to cultivate physically fit and well-rounded international talents in the new era.

Making Physical Education a Key Part of Holistic Education

One hundred years ago, Cai Yuanpei, then president of Peking University, emphasized the importance of physical education for the development of personality by stating that "the first step to a complete personality is physical education". Today, with the improvement of people's material living standard and physical quality, the function of sports in nurturing people has become more prominent. Sports not only strengthen the body, but also enable students to sharpen their minds and deepen their understanding of life and enthusiasm for life.

In recent years, more and more regions have increased the value of physical education in their secondary school exams, and students' sports training experience is gradually being taken into account by more of the world's top universities. These phenomena indicate that physical education is becoming an increasingly important component of basic education, and that strengthening physical education has important positive implications for students' character development, further education development, and even social development. International schools should take advantage of worldwide trends in physical education to strengthen physical education and make it a key part of holistic education.

Ⅰ. The Importance

of Sport Development

"The prerequisite for cultivating people with sound personality is sports"

——Yuanpei Cai

The significance of physical education for talent training and student development is no longer a new topic. With the improvement of people's living standards, educators have begun to emphasize the educational function of sports. Doing sports can make teenagers healthier, smarter, and be concentrated. It can also improve students' time management, leadership, and teamwork ability. At the same time, it can also shape their identity, strengthen their resume have better jobs and careers.[1]

Physical education benefits students in both short-term and long-term development. The top Universities in the U.S. also take the students' physical training experience as an essential consideration. Because doing sports can not only strengthen the physique but also teach children to win under the constraints of rules, to face success and failure, to overcome difficulties and challenges, cooperate with others, and make students have stronger willpower, social adaptability and help students establish correct values and form a complete personality.[1]

KingLead Research Institute investigated 26 international schools with excellent sports specialties from KingLead China International School Sports Characteristics Ranking between 2020 and 2022. The research includes the school's physical education concept, features in education, similarities and differences among schools, and future development trends.

2022 KingLead China International School Sports Characteristics Ranking

Ⅱ. Research on

Sports Characteristics

1

Concept

Among the 26 schools surveyed, KingLead Research Institute extracted several keywords related to the physical education concept, including "paying attention to physical education, and cultivate talents with all-round development","using sports to support the all-round development of talents", and "shape the personality and escorting the future".

01. Value Sports,

All-round Education

The 26 International schools that participated in the survey by KingLead Research Institute all regard sports as a part of a comprehensive and balanced education. Based on paying sufficient attention to the sport, all schools are committed to providing students with various courses and integrating high-quality resources inside and outside the school. At the same time, they have their own advantages in training goals and methods.

Some schools focus on cultivating physical fitness and sports skills, aiming to enhance students' physical strength, endurance, flexibility, agility, perseverance, and other crafts. Some schools focus on guiding students' self-exploration and personalized training. Other schools focus on cultivating students' character in physical education, set up frustration education, highlight the sense of responsibility, willpower, competitiveness, and creativity, and give entire exercise to the indispensable psychological quality of modern people in the process of physical education.

02. Using Sports to Support

the All-round Development

Although physical education has received significant attention, in several schools investigated by KingLead Research Institute, physical education usually complements academic education and art education. For example, physical education has always been one of the critical goals for Beijing Huijia Private School, combined with academic and art learning, which represents the "primary colors" of Huijia's education.[2]

At the same time, the dominant position of secondary education in international schools will not be shaken by sports. Sports often use auxiliary teaching to help students' all-round development. For example, WAB regards sports as a supplement to academic courses. Physical education will never take over the dominant position of the curriculum system in WAB, but it should be a tool that promotes the all-round development of students.[3]

03. Shape the Personality

and Escort the Future

KingLead Research Institute found that "personality training" frequently appears in the school's physical education concept. Among many characters, the most mentioned is the "teamwork" ability. Through ball games and multiplayer sports, students can learn to communicate, to cooperate towards the same goal. Leadership, responsibility and strong are also frequently mentioned keywords. Actively participating in sports activities can exercise students' leadership, including communication, decision-making, overcoming adversity, self-discipline, dealing with success and failure, setting and striving for goals, etc.

2

Diverse Curriculum

The survey shows that the international schools are rich and diverse in curriculum, giving students enough space for free exploration, independent choice, and self-development to cultivate students' abilities from different dimensions. The courses mainly include sports and healthcare, team sports, individual sports and leisure sports. Some schools divide sports activities into compulsory, elective, club courses, fundamental groups and specialty groups to meet the students' different needs. While some other schools concentrated on integrating high-quality resources to create their own characteristic activities, which occupied a leading teaching position and achieved excellent results in sports competitions.

KingLead Research Institute counted the sports activities offered by the international schools that participated in the survey (see the table below). Ice hockey, golf and fencing are often provided as specialty activities.

In addition to the regular football, basketball, volleyball, and various physical skills (endurance, speed, flexibility, etc.), the physical education in SMIC School is quite diversified. In addition to the interest-based physical education in primary school, SMIC School's kindergarten seeks recreational sports teaching and encourages students to get physical exercise from games. SMIC's junior high school students explore their interests more deeply in various activities, and then the school will implement specialized physical education after students enter high school. [5]

Harrow Shenzhen regards physical education and students' physical development as one of the core elements of the curriculum. The school provides more than 40 different extracurricular sports activities for students. These extracurricular courses provide students with more than 130 activities, including yoga, K-pop dance, golf and more traditional football, tennis, and basketball. [6]

3

Special and Innovative Activities

In addition to diversified courses, international schools will regularly organize innovative sports activities to enrich students' after-school life. While enriching students' extracurricular life, it can also stimulate children's interest in sports with a relaxed atmosphere and fresh experience.

The types of those activities mainly include the school-based plan, student-centered sports team, students' interests-based activities, regular entertaining competitions, and activities with current events and hot spots, etc.

01. Featured Program

WAB has set up the "WAB wild" program, which is a series of outdoor experiential education courses. Each year, the school will hold 20+ outdoor adventures and one-day trips. The activities include land and water adventure, interdisciplinary experience, navigation, radio communication, survival skills, slings, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, rescue training, etc. The school also has the "Tiger Sports Entertainment Network", a campus broadcasting team, for students to broadcast the school's sports events, event reviews and player interviews.

02. Student Team

The SSIS has a student-led "Sabres" team, which is mainly responsible for planning and organizing activities for the school sports team. It aims to award the students who have participated the long-term training sports, including Sports Spirit Day, Sports Award Ceremonies, and School Sports Competitions. SSIS also holds Sabres games every year to encourage students to enjoy the fun of sports competitions, show excellent sportsmanship and carry forward SSIS spirit. The school also added water sports in 2021.

03. Special Activities

The special sports activities of Chengdu Experimental Foreign Language School are Rowing and climbing. The students who grew up inland might be unfamiliar with water sports. However, several students love rowing and are committed to popularizing and sharing this water sports activity with everyone. For the climbing activity, there is Spirit Week in Chengdu Experimental Foreign Language School for students to explore, learn and experience nature. Students can not only climb high and look far, but also measure nature with their footsteps. They deeply felt the infinite power brought by walking, and at the same time, in the group's fun ice-breaking action, they broke down barriers and narrowed the distance between them. [7]

04. Entertaining activities

Relying on the abundant resources of the Dulwich College International, Students in Dehong regularly participate in group-wide events alongside students from their sister schools in the Dulwich College International family of schools. One of the most important events is the Dulwich Olympiad, a large-scale sports and art competition that takes place every four years. The founding school in London, Dulwich College hosted the Dulwich Olympiad in March 2019 [8]. Beijing New Talent Academy will set October as the Sports Month to hold sports games and other wonderful competitions [9]. Beijing Huijia Private School has established dozens of sports clubs and launched a series of activities such as "Huijia healthy and vibrant campus" and "Huijia Campus Guinness" to cultivate children's interest and habits in sports. BASIS International School Hangzhou regularly holds "Mini Quidditch" competitions, which will mobilize the enthusiasm of physical education teachers, encourage teachers to open their minds and organize exciting sports activities such as obstacle competitions and small Olympic competitions [10].

05. Follow the Hot Spot

Some schools also keep up with the hot spots and actively respond to the national call. For example, on the occasion of the Winter Olympics, some schools create special winter Olympics activities around the theme of ice and snow sports to stimulate students' enthusiasm for ice and snow sports.

To support the success of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games and carry forward the Olympic spirit, Tianjin MacDuffie School has undertaken one of the series of activities promoted by the Tianjin Winter and Water Sports Management Center to popularize ice and snow, the "Winter Olympic Knowledge Experience Tour." During participating in the exhibition tour, students gained knowledge of ice and snow, and enjoyed the sports. [11] Nord Anglia School Beijing, Fangshan, held the triathlon competition, and let the students experience the optimistic spirit of sport. [13]

06. Others

Some schools will carry out sports activities in combination with their own characteristics and conditions. For example, Harrow International School Shenzhen uses its college system and bonus incentives to improve students' interests and competitiveness.

4

Cultivation Mode

of "Sports + Academic"

In addition to the educational concept of "sports supplemented", international schools know that parents and students are most concerned about students' development. Students' growth is directly reflected in the school admission results in the short term. Therefore, some schools have launched the "sports + academic" training mode.

Tianjin MacDuffie School combines Golf learning with academic learning, integrates the essence of golf projects, and formulated different courses for golf students. By providing students with golf training, competitions, further education and other college admission services, golf specialty students can apply to colleges through exam-free and single-entry exams. Thus, the students will have a new opportunity to get into the top universities.

This "sports + academic" training mode is helpful for students to get into the top universities by their outstanding performance in sports playing. For example, Stefanie Deng, a 2020 graduate of Shanghai private SMIC School, was admitted by the University of Washington with excellent golf achievements (listed in the top 10 in Asia).

Resources Inside &

Outside School

To fully promote students' sports development, international schools have made great efforts to provide resources for students, from the hardware facilities to the faculty team and the off-campus cooperation.

01. Facilities

The swimming pool is on the first floor of the Comprehensive building in Nord Anglia School Beijing, Fangshan. This is an international standard indoor swimming pool with constant temperature and humidity all day, equipped with an imported circulating water purification system. Special swimming teachers in the training pool will teach beginners and basic swimming skills. The standard swimming pool with 6 lanes is used for routine sports such as weekdays and after-school classes. Nord Anglia also has a multifunctional indoor basketball court built according to the standards of FIBA. The floor is paved, and the telescopic basketball frame can be adjusted according to the child's different height. There are also 360 anti-collision walls and a fresh air system to ensure children's sports safety to the greatest extent. Even in the cold and windy winter, children can wear thin clothes and exercise here.

02. Faculty Team

Most of the surveyed schools employ qualified Chinese and foreign teachers to provide professional guidance for children's sports development in terms of building a faculty team. For example:

Bejing Huijia Private School's sports center has 23 Chinese and foreign teachers from different countries. The ratio of Chinese and foreign teachers is 1.5:1, and more than 1/2 of them have master's degrees. They are jointly responsible for the physical education and health courses in primary and secondary schools, the training and competition of school sports clubs and school teams, the competitions inside and outside the campus, and also the relevant sports research work. They have opened more than 10 sports courses, including swimming, equestrian, football, golf, and football, with nearly 20 clubs and 14 school teams.

03. External Cooperation

In terms of external cooperation, international schools also "show their magic powers" and try their best to create a broader platform for students' sports development. Schools try to provide more opportunities for students and broaden their horizons. For example, join intercollegiate associations and organizations, cooperate with professional sports companies, invite celebrities in the sports industry to interact with students, etc.

Joining Intercollegiate Associations and Organizations

WAB provides students of all grades to participate in 16 different competitive sports. It also offers a wide range of sports exchange programs and cooperates with other international schools locally and abroad. As a member of APAC, ACAMIS and ISAC, students often can participate in a wide range of balanced intercollegiate sports, which is also an important part of their educational experience.

Business Cooperation

The SSIS has been working closely with PING since 2011 to develop the school's youth golf program further and cultivate an excellent SSIS golf team. SSIS students have access to first-class golf clubs and the most advanced technical support during their studies.

Invite Celebrities

WAB school once invited Stephen Marbury, a former NBA basketball star, to visit the campus to communicate and interact with teachers and students in person. Tell the story of his battle in NBA and CBA and tell the students the importance of building good habits, being hardworking and never giving up.

Tianjin Yinghua Experimental School invited Tan Ruiwu, the national table tennis championship champion, the former player of the Chinese national table tennis team and the tutor of Yinghua art and sports comprehensive quality course, to teach students fundamental table tennis skills. This close contact with world-class players undoubtedly deepens students' love for table tennis. [15]

6

Specific Management

In terms of management mode, the surveyed international schools pay special attention to the training programs and do detailed planning for curriculum differentiation, time management, teaching mode, after-school supplement, etc.

Beijing New Talent Academy has set up different physical education teaching schedules for students of different ages. In primary school, grades 1-2 have three P.E. classes per week; Grade, 3-6, have two P.E classes per week. The junior middle school adopts male and female separate teaching for middle school, with three P.E. classes per week. The senior high school adopts the module teaching mode, and sets up basketball, badminton, track and field and other projects.

Ⅲ. Prospects of Physical

Education in the Future

1

Arrange Multi-

Dimensional Courses

01. From "Wu" to "Wen"

The opening of physical education courses in international schools has a trend from personal practice to theoretical expansion. In addition to promoting children's participation in sports, schools also recognize the importance of introductory courses in sports theory, sports nutrition, and physical & mental health development training. This theoretical knowledge can ensure students to better understand and protect their bodies during sports games and participate in sports healthily and safely.

Tianjin MacDuffie School has built a "Trinity" physical education curriculum arrangement of "Fundamental Physical Education Courses + Exercise Course + Extracurricular Sports Club" and set up physical education theory and practice projects. Through the study of theory courses, students can understand the development, rules, and safety criteria of different sports to make sports healthier and help students grow more scientifically.

02. Trendy, Diversified

and Integrated

In addition to the traditional sports offered by international schools, some schools also began to explore trendy, acceptable, and integrated sports, such as martial arts, taekwondo, K-pop, Hip-hop dance, yoga, cheerleading, etc. With the successful holding of the Beijing Winter Olympics, ice and snow sports may also become a hot topic in the future.

The featured course of Beijing New Talent Academy is martial arts courses for boys and dance courses for girls, which have been open for ten years. At the same class time, boys practice martial arts to cultivate their energy and spirit, and girls learn to dance and develop their nobility and elegance. According to the law of students' physical and psychological development, the characteristics of martial arts and dancing courses, combined with the educational goal of "love and creation", the school divides the classes into three fields, six educational purposes, and six themes. It covers ancient poetry, nature, national culture, regional culture, global vision, etc., to cultivate students' ability to experience, appreciate and express beauty.

2

Improve Sports Participation

After the "double reduction" policy, the state requires compulsory physical education courses to increase class hours at primary and secondary schools. People generally recognize the vital role of physical education in the development of teenagers. In the future, improving and promoting students' participation in sports, letting sports become a part of their lives, and achieving full participation in sports will be the new direction of international schools.

01. Using Fragment Time

International schools can set aside sports time for all staff or use fragmented time, such as breaks, and let sports be part of students' daily lives.

Beijing New Talent Academy has "happy break" activities to ensure that each student has at least one hour to do physical exercise every day. The break courses are divided into a moral education day, a physical fitness day, a featured activity day, a specific activity day, and a free day. Through doing different sports every day, students will fall in love with a kind of sport, master a sports skill and form a habit of doing sport.

02. Faculty Team Adjustment

Schools can also strengthen students' passion for sports activities by recruiting more professional and popular teachers. The situation of more boys than girls engaging in sports activities has always been an issue. Compared with girls, boys tend to participate more widely in sports and are more competitive.

However, with the development of society, people are more and more aware of women's power. From women's volleyball to women's national football team, and then to Eileen Gu, excellent female athletes became popular, encouraging more girls to pursue health and strength and participate in sports more. International schools may be able to meet girls' sports needs by recruiting female physical education teachers and coaches to create more girl-friendly courses.

3

Promote Professional

Sports Management

We found that some schools have professional sports management teams during our research.

WAB school is a good example. Sports in WAB have their own complete, perfect, and global system. There are explicit rules and regulations regarding training, season system, team formation and selection, uniform, coaching team, supervision, medical care, and weather response.

With the improvement of physical education, and students' physical education achievement, having a professional sports management team will become the trend among international schools. Schools may refer to some excellent cases of the sports management team at home and abroad and look for a chance to visit and study. Thus, to promote the campus sports to a higher standard.

4

Promote the Cultivation of

International Innovative Talents

The International Olympic Committee has such a paragraph in the Olympic Charter:

"Everyone should enjoy the possibility to engage in sports, without any form of discrimination, reflect the mutual understanding, friendship, solidarity and Olympic spirit of fair competition."[16]

The spirit of mutual understanding, friendship, and unity condensed in sports endow it with the role of international communication. The effectiveness of sports in improving personality and broadening knowledge is also conducive to the divergence of students' thinking. Therefore, sports can also contribute to the cultivation of innovative international talents. The research found that some schools have explored this path, such as integrating international etiquette and cultural knowledge into the curriculum, benchmarking project standards to international standards, and encouraging students to participate in international events.

4. Conclusion

"Physical education and knowledge education must maintain a balance. Sports should make vigorous, mighty men of valor, and make a sound mind in a sound frame."

——Plato

Strengthening the physical mind of teenagers will have a positive impact on social development. International schools advocate and implement holistic education, and physical education is a starting point that cannot be ignored. Through this research, KingLead Research Institute hopes to deeply summarize and analyze the experience and methods of these sports featured international schools and look forward to the future development of international schools, and the cultivation of innovative international talents.
