School Introduction

Founded in 2016 as part of the Harrow Family of Schools, Harrow International School Shanghai is connected to 450 years of global excellence via the unique Harrow genetics which binds all schools together. A Harrow Shanghai education is based on the same ethos and identity that has characterised a Harrow education in the UK for centuries and here people will find a school where the best of Western and Eastern traditions, history and heritage are seamlessly fused

As a newly opened international school, Harrow Shanghai has the vibrancy that most new schools have. In addition, Harrow Shanghai has also absorbed the excellent school running experience of other schools in the Harrow family and has the courage to explore and change under the guidance of Harrow's traditional values, showing unlimited innovation.

Since 2019, every one of pupils in Harrow Shanghai achieved the grades they needed to enter their first-choice university, with many going on to the most sought-after universities on the planet such as University of Cambridge, University College London, Imperial College London, University of Edinburgh, University of British Columbia to study demanding subjects such as Education Policy, Physics, and Computer Science.

Harrow Shanghai

01 Committed to better service with brand new facilities

Set in the northern part of Pudong, amidst the many and diverse facilities of the Waigaoqiao district, Harrow enjoys an enviable geographic location, with excellent accessibility, by both road and rail, from the rest of Pudong and Puxi.

Harrow offers the very best educational facilities for its pupils, purpose-built, and incorporating everything required for academic and extra-curricular excellence in 21st-century schooling. One of the great strengths of the campus is the coherence and integrity of the various schools that make up Harrow Shanghai. For instance, the Early Years classrooms, the children’s play areas and their general space, all in their own designated wing of the school, are the envy of other schools in Shanghai.

Turning to the Senior and Prep Schools, there are state-of-the-art classrooms, science laboratories, ICT suites, and art studios. Pupils need time to relax and reflect. The sports facilities are second to none, with a double-sized sports hall accommodating eight different sports, a roof-top running track, a multi-purpose playground, a 25-meter swimming pool, and not forgetting floodlit football/rugby pitches.

In terms of health and safety, the measures taken by Harrow Shanghai are also first-class. In terms of hardware facilities, Harrow Shanghai has adopted the most effective health and safety measures, whether it is parking lots, school bus pick-up points, amusement areas, sports facilities, laboratories and studios, these meticulous designs reflect the importance of safety, and also reflect a strong humanistic care in management and service. All buses have one escort on-board to look after the children. Their pastoral care processes are carefully designed and reviewed regularly to provide support and care for all students.

Harrow Shanghai has a designated Clinic in the school which can be accessed by students as needed for first aid treatment, and the support staff and selected academic staff all have regular first aid training. However, there is no bigger issue in Shanghai than the quality of the air we all breathe. At Harrow, they take the protection of all communities from adverse air quality very seriously indeed. They adhere very strictly to the school policies and procedures on air quality levels, and those policies reflect a very cautious, and safe, approach to activities outside the school buildings.

The school benefits from the incorporation of an effective air filtration system. This has been installed as a key feature in the overall air-conditioning system, which provides both cooling and heating to all the school. This involves a series of highly efficient filters, including the high-density filters, which extract the PM2.5 particles. The system is designed to reduce the AQI to a figure of under 30 in the school. On the other hand, Harrow Shanghai has a whole campus automatic public warning system which alerts the community whenever AQI reaches a reading of 180 or above. The School Clinic will also communicate with all staff whenever a level of 180 is reached to ensure all pupils and staff remain indoors. The entire school benefits from the air purification system so that the quality of air for all people on campus indoors is excellent. This has been modified to take into account the increased sensitivity to pollution in younger children.

02 Customized learning and personalized education

Harrow Shanghai has always been both forward-looking and innovative in its continuous improvement and optimization of its curriculum. In its curriculum development, always an on-going process, Harrow Shanghai is forward-thinking and innovative. They believe in a curriculum that has its foundations in intellectual content rather than assessment, important though that is. Harrow Shanghai aims to equip its students to think, appreciate and create while always having the opportunity to excel.

In teaching, Harrow Shanghai appreciates the value of many traditional teaching methods and employs them with skill and enthusiasm, but Harrow Shanghai also believes that lessons are best when students are actively involved in a dynamic process of thinking, discovering, and understanding things for themselves. The way students learn is just as important as the way teachers teach. Harrow Shanghai, therefore, emphasizes interactive and cooperative learning; devising lessons that draw on the different knowledge, aptitudes and learning styles of individual students.

For example, in the teaching of Chinese, Harrow Shanghai has adopted a personalized education in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. Horizontally, students are divided into two groups based on whether or not they have native language background.

Vertically, to cater for students from various backgrounds and language levels; Mandarin at Harrow focuses on differentiation and individual progression. Mandarin is taught to all students from Pre-Nursery to Year 9. It is compulsory for students in these year levels to study the Chinese language and culture three to four times a week. From Year 10 in Upper School, Mandarin becomes an elective subject; the IGCSE First Language pathway is available to native speakers, Second Language is available to intermediate students and Mandarin Foreign Language is available to non-native speakers. AS and A-Level Chinese, suited to all language pathways are taught in Year 12 and 13.

English Learning is a necessary task for children in international schools. For students who are not native speakers in Harrow Shanghai, learning English well is not an easy task. In response, Harrow Shanghai has set up a Language Tutoring Course (EAL) for non-native English speakers. The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Programme offers Non-native English language pupils, with little or no English, the opportunity to study in a British school and fully integrate into British school life. The programme is designed to allow students to work at their own pace of language development in a safe and supportive environment, where they receive a mixture of both academic and pastoral support. This helps enable them to access the curriculum and join mainstream classes once they have sufficient classroom language and have gained confidence. It is a bespoke education, catering to each child’s individual needs.

Besides, Harrow Shanghai values diversity and understands that each student is unique and has different learning needs. The Learning Support Department at Harrow aims to support, through targeted and bespoke intervention, those students that have mild learning challenges and requires time-limited intervention to address specific gaps in learning to accelerate their progress.

Harrow Shanghai

03 Facing the future and cultivating leadership talents

Harrow School’s Purpose is to prepare students with diverse backgrounds and abilities for a life of learning, leadership, service and personal fulfillment. The motto: “Leadership for a better world” was also implemented and practiced in Harrow Shanghai.

At Harrow Shanghai, cultivating and nurturing the leadership potential in every child is at the very heart of the journey we have designed for our pupils. By constantly exposing them, day by day, to opportunities which will challenge them intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially, both within and outside of the classroom, we watch them grow and flourish.

In order to enhance leadership and service opportunities, Harrow Shanghai whole school programme develops key skills and leadership attributes. This programme begins in the Lower School, with incremental progression as pupils develop in age and awareness. In the Senior School, there is an expectation that the outreach and service programme is purposeful and increasingly pupil-led. Ultimately, pupils will be global citizens, possessing international mindedness, and a clear understanding of the value of commitment and service to others.

Harrow Shanghai believes that their pupils with six key Leadership Attributes including, contributing positively to the community, applying knowledge with compassion, solving problems collaboratively, solving problems creatively, making fair and just choices, and facing challenges with determination, which are the most desired by the future world, and Harrow Shanghai is committed to cultivating students with these qualities to face the future.
