DSI Arts Gala Night

Zoe

Justina

Yoyo

Miko

Lucas

Joseph Sarvas

Clara

Shellin

Chris

Gala

The curtains closed on 'Round in Eighty, and with it, the DSI Arts Gala Night 2026 came to a quiet, tender end. For months, this adapted version of Around the World in Eighty Days lived in rehearsal rooms, in scribbled script margins, in the nerves and laughter of students and teachers who chose to tell a story that wasn’t just about adventure, but about us. Our multicultural community, our inside jokes, our small moments of homesickness and belonging. They all found their way onto that stage.

What you saw wasn’t just a school play. It was a group of young people, guided by teachers who stayed after hours, fuelled by a Core Production Team who refused to cut corners as they turning a classic literature into a mirror. We laughed at the running gags only DSI would understand. We felt the weight of a shared journey, because that’s what being internationally minded really means: not just traveling far, but learning to carry each other’s worlds along the way.

The DSI Arts Gala Night succeeded because no one stood alone. The cast rehearsed until their bodies remembered every beat. The teachers offered not just direction, but trust. And every single person who showed up proved that art, when made together, stops being a performance and starts being a quiet form of impact.

For a school celebrating 15 years, this was more than a milestone. It was a reminder that the stories we create, onstage or off, can ripple outward. 'Round in Eighty asked a simple question: What happens when people from everywhere try to get somewhere together? The answer, we hope, lingered long after the final bow.

More moments from the night... raw, real, and unrehearsed, will appear on  the Media Cube WeChat Video Channel. Go watch them and recount the memories of this journey we took as a united family.

Thank you for being there. In person or just in spirit. This night belonged to all of you. All of us.

And our story continues……

Zoe

Reaching out to sponsors was one of the toughest parts — constant follow-ups, lots of patience. It taught me a lot about persistence and what good communication actually takes. I also helped with publicity and coordination. Seeing the work of the performance, creativity, and logistics teams finally come together on stage — that feeling of accomplishment was something else. I learned that a successful event isn't just about creativity and enthusiasm. It takes trust, it takes teamwork, and it definitely taught me how to keep my cool under pressure.

Justina

I juggled sponsorship liaison with performing on stage. Handling external partnerships taught me how to balance what sponsors wanted with what the school needed, and I gained a real appreciation for just how much detailed planning goes into a smooth production. Seeing it all come together beautifully, knowing I'd played a part in it, was genuinely rewarding.

Yoyo

Securing sponsorship really tested my patience and communication — reaching out to businesses, writing proposals, negotiating. None of it was easy. But knowing their support helped bring the stage to life made it all worth it. When the curtains closed, what I felt was a mix of excitement and emotion. That show was the best testament to our team's months of hard work.

Miko

There were definitely stressful moments during prep, but seeing everyone stay so committed and supportive made the whole process rewarding. My advice for future CPT leaders: make role divisions clearer from the start, and give yourselves more prep time — it really helps cut down the last-minute stress.

Lucas

I was in charge of props — organising them, sourcing whatever was missing, and making sure everything got on and off stage on time. I learned pretty fast that even the smallest prop mistake can throw a performance off, so staying organised and communicating clearly is everything. This experience taught me to prepare ahead and stay flexible, and it honestly sharpened my problem-solving skills in a real way.

Joseph Sarvas

I originally auditioned for the lead, but ended up joining the creative team instead, helping rewrite the script and bring in new characters. Writing a play for the first time was genuinely challenging, but Mr. Syahir and Ms. Connie guided me through it. I later got to perform as one of the characters I'd written — "The Pranksters," based on my friends and myself — so getting into character felt pretty natural. Memorising all the songs and dances was tough, but after enough practice, we definitely stole the show.

Clara

I chose to step back from performing because of IB commitments, so I poured my love for musical theatre into visuals and merchandising. I researched cultural references, hand-drew designs for tote bags and postcards, and formatted the programme booklet to look like an actual Broadway playbill. As a leader, I learned pretty quickly that delegating — playing to people's strengths and trusting them — works so much better than trying to do everything alone. After six years at DSI performing on stage, watching the gala from the audience for the first time gave me a whole new appreciation for the invisible hours that go into a production.

Shellin

The show turned out way beyond what I'd imagined. My biggest stress was the merchandise design — early drafts that flopped made me pretty anxious. But when the samples finally looked right, and I saw people lining up to buy them at the gala, I knew all that effort had been worth it.

Chris

The moment that felt most rewarding was when we laid out all the posters, merchandise, invitations, and the booklet together, and could finally see they formed one complete Gala visual identity.

Our group of five handled the visuals, publicity, and merch design for DSI Arts Night. Each of us designed images for three products. Clara and I mainly focused on the promotional materials. Ms. Wu Yang helped us revise the publicity designs, and Ms. Woody followed up on merch production and ordering.

The biggest challenge was balancing two things. First, keeping a consistent visual style — we had to find a middle ground between everyone's different approaches and the overall theme. Second, hiding story-related details in each design. We wanted the merch to be more than just nice-looking items — we wanted them to help the audience remember how the Gala made them feel. For example, in the Barcelona design, we worked in elements from the wedding scene, so people could look at it afterward and recall that moment and the emotions that came with it.

After several rounds of revisions, when we finally put everything together and it all looked like it belonged to one event — that was a really moving moment for me. It made me realize that design isn't just about making beautiful images. It's about communication, teamwork, and storytelling. I felt proud because our work became something real that the audience could see, hold, buy, and keep as a memory of the Gala.

The curtain has fallen, but the magic lingers.

Every piece of Gala merch was designed with a little secret tucked inside — our way of turning memories and youthful spirit into collectible "Easter eggs." Did you spot them?

A heartfelt thank-you to all the guests and parents who joined us, to every sponsor who believed in our vision, to the school departments for their support behind the scenes, and to our teachers and fellow students for cheering us on. You are the reason this student-led production came to life and shone so brightly.

Gala merch is still on sale — take home a piece of this memory.

See you at next year's Gala!
